In the beginning there was the bristlebot. A cute little mechanical being made from a hacked toothbrush. Its simple yet elegant design made it a favorite project for makers of all ages. Next came the dipbots. These mobile vibrating bugs were made with discarded high tech integrated circuits. Now comes the Socbot. The next evolutionary step in vibratory micro robot design. An advanced microbot which uses a wire wrap dip socket for locomotion. Built around the powerful PICAXE -08M microcontroller, operated by an IR television remote control, powered by watch batteries, driven by dual outboard vibrating pager motors, this mini socbot is small enough to sit on a quarter. Where will the next advancement of evolutionary technology take us. This project has been featured on MAKEzine and Instructables.
